Barton H. “Buzz” Thompson, Jr. is an of counsel in O’Melveny’s Silicon Valley office and a member of the Water Industry Practice Group. He is the Robert E. Paradise Professor of Natural Resources Law at Stanford Law School, a professor in the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, and a Senior Fellow of the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment. He also leads Stanford’s Water in the West program. The author of multiple books on water law and policy, he is one of the world’s leading experts on water issues, with over forty years of experience. In 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court appointed Buzz to serve as the special master in Montana v. Wyoming (137 Original). He also is a former member of the U.S. EPA’s Science Advisory Board. Prior to joining the Stanford Law School faculty in 1986, Buzz was a partner in our Los Angeles office, and a lecturer at the UCLA School of Law. He was a law clerk to Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist of the U.S. Supreme Court and Judge Joseph T. Sneed of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Buzz is actively involved with nonprofit conservation organizations. He is the chairman of the board of the Resources Legacy Fund and also serves on the boards of The Nature Conservancy and the Santa Lucia Conservancy. He also previously chaired the board of the American Farmland Trust. Buzz advises our clients in water law property and environmental matters, and is also available to serve as a private arbitrator and special master.
